SUMMER COLLEGE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - 2007 MINI COURSES

Only time for a week of college this summer or two? Attend one of our special minicourses for one week or two. No grades are awarded but in a morning and afternoon session professors and students immerse themselves in the music studio, science lab, or workshop. In the evenings, college students are available to assist with your work, but some evenings are set aside just for fun. Students who successfully complete their workshops will receive a certificate of completion. The cost for room, board and tuition is $1,075 for the one week program.

Writing College Application Essays
Students will explore the college application essay developing strategies for writing essays which inform, persuade and engage the reader. Students will examine a number of successful college essays and write, study, and critique their own personal essays

Workshop in Sports Media*
Interested in pursuing a career in sports media? In this workshop you'll get hands-on experience writing your own material while learning about a professional career in sports media. During some classes you will work in a computer lab, while at other times you will be shooting video footage in a television studio. Your class will also visit a professional sport organization (baseball franchise,Watkins Glen Speedway, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, or similar site) to observe media members in action.

Jazz Guitar
Intermediate and advanced high school guitarists will spend an intensive week immersed in jazz guitar. Students will study in the studio and in ensembles, receiving small group and individual instruction. Students will attend a public performance by their professor, Steve Brown. Some students will have experience in jazz guitar but all students will be motivated musicians looking to enhance their skills. 3 credits.

Global Warming and Environmental Change
The danger from global warming is reported in our newspapers, on tv, and on our computer screens. What are the facts and what is just doom and gloom? In this course we will review current scientific understanding, learn to critically analyze news reports, and consider how to move toward a sustainable future. This mini course is designed for students interested in environmental and sustainability issues from a political, policy or science perspective.

Introduction to Financial Markets
Financial markets strongly affect the global economy as well as the fortunes of individual investors. Students work in Ithaca College's award winning trading room to understand basic financial instruments, market efficiency, and how the stock market works

Stand-up Comedy
Being funny is not the same as being a comedian. But it helps. This mini-course will analyze the comic routines of several well-known comedians. In addition, each student will spend the week developing a short routine that will be performed on stage. The nationally known comedian from Nickelodeon, Louis Ramey, will teach the mini-course and also give one public performance while on campus.

Theatrical Mask Workshop
The Theatrical Mask Workshop is designed to give students an introduction to mask performance and construction. The course will allow students to explore common materials and techniques of mask construction as well as offer an opportunity to experience performance techniques associated with theatrical masks. Starting with basic face casting, each student will produce a plaster cast of his or her face. Students will then be guided through the design and construction process resulting in at least one completed mask. Daily explorations of performance techniques will include work in masks supplied by the instructor and culminate in working in the masks created in the workshop.

Writing the Short Story
This mini-course will analyze both professional and student writing with each student developing one short story emphasizing plot, characterization, dialogue, description, narration, mood and viewpoint.
